Buyer guide

Balance product visibility with carton strength

A window carton should reveal the right part of the product without weakening the front panel or interfering with folds, glue areas and packing. Window geometry, board grade, product clearance, film type, internal support and artwork alignment should be developed as one specification.

Film-covered display windows

A clear film can limit direct handling and help support a broader opening. Film gauge, clarity, adhesion area, crease clearance and end-use requirements should be confirmed around the packed product and destination market.

Open die-cut windows

An open cut-out can reduce components and provide direct texture or fragrance access where appropriate. The product must tolerate exposure, and the remaining paperboard borders still need enough strength for handling and shelf display.

Window cartons with inserts

A paperboard or molded-fibre insert positions the product behind the opening and controls movement. Visible area, product orientation, finger access, retention and insert height should be checked together before the window is finalised.

Window carton specification checklist

  • Internal dimensions, product orientation, visible area and packed weight
  • Board grade, carton style, opening shape, border width and film choice
  • Insert, product clearance, folds, glue seam and window adhesion area
  • Artwork alignment, finish, quantity, packing method and destination market

Approve the packed sample

A physical sample with the representative product helps confirm visibility, window alignment, film reflection, panel stiffness, product retention and packing efficiency before mass production.

Window carton buyer FAQ

Should a window carton use film or an open cut-out?

A clear film window helps protect the product from handling and supports a larger opening, while an open cut-out can reduce material and work for products that tolerate direct exposure. Product protection, hygiene, ventilation, recycling goals and destination-market requirements should be reviewed before choosing.

How large can the window be without weakening the carton?

The safe opening depends on carton dimensions, board grade, product weight, window position, remaining border width, folds and glue areas. A structural sample should be checked with the actual product because an oversized or poorly positioned window can reduce panel stiffness and stacking performance.

What product details are needed to design the window?

Provide the product dimensions, orientation, visible area, packed weight, required clearances and any internal tray or insert. The window shape and position should be developed around the real product so the intended feature remains visible after packing and distribution.

What should be approved before window-carton production?

Approve internal dimensions, product fit, board and window material, opening size and position, film adhesion, folds, closure, artwork alignment, finishing and packing method. A physical sample is recommended for confirming visibility, panel strength and window integrity before mass production.
